It is over 25 years since our then Secretary and now Club President, Brain Cox, confirmed my membership at Wimbledon Common Golf Club, and that after a rather inauspicious ‘introductory vetting round’ on the course. Now I am looking forward to my year as Men’s Captain at this special Golf Club.
To play golf on the Common is both a privilege and a challenge, all what golf is intended to be. Then to share the company of our members and visitors at the nineteenth hole offers an opportunity to recover and to relax in convivial surroundings.
Our course is suitable for golfers of all abilities and ages. Our Greens’ keeping team strive to ensure the course is in optimum condition, year-round, whatever the elements throw at them. Due to their hard work, coupled with the fact the Common is on sandy soil, the course is often open, when others are closed.
With a par of 68, the course is not long; but all hitters beware, you’ll need to be accurate off the tee to avoid the ’rough’ (’rough’ to be read as ‘grasses, woodlands and brambles nigh impossible to extricate one’s ball from’). Players of all abilities will need a good short game too. Those who can putt will be rewarded on our high-quality greens.
Over the next twelve months I intend to play with as many members (both old and new), visitors and most importantly, prospective new members to introduce them to our Club. As we walk around the course, we can all enjoy the flora and fauna the Common has to offer. As you play Running Deer, Queensmere and Sand Pit (our 11th, 12th and 13th holes, respectively) admire the ancient Oak trees and remember to listen out for our resident buzzard.
When I first joined the Club, I was struck by the wide range of social and competitive golf, both internal and external, available to all. So, if you are considering a round of golf, come to Wimbledon Common where you will be warmly welcomed.
Lastly, I would like to thank Andrew Copeman, who has kindly agreed to be my Vice-Captain. For the forthcoming year, I look forward to working with Andrew, together with our Ladies’ Captain Pam Jennings and Ladies’ Vice-Captain Andrea Talbot West.
Thank you
James Wilson.
I became a member of the Club in 2014, having first joined the Academy. The Academy was my first ever introduction to golf and I was hooked from the start, though my abilities have never quite matched up to my enthusiasm! I really regret taking it up quite so late in life as golf is certainly a much harder sport than I’d imagined.
Although the course can be challenging at times, I have never regretted my choice of Wimbledon Common Golf Club. You would have to go a long way to find such a friendly bunch of people.
The Ladies’ Section is going from strength to strength. Several lady members have stepped forward to ensure the Wednesday and Friday roll-ups are well attended, organising fun competitions and encouraging everyone to join in. The diary is packed with internal and external competitions, so there are plenty of opportunities to play competitively as well as socially, and also many chances to play on other courses.
Like James, I want to play with a wide range of players, especially new members and those of the Academy who are keen to do a few holes. I am lucky to have the support of a lovely Vice Captain, Andrea Talbot-West, and we in turn are supported by a wonderful Committee so I am looking forward to a great year ahead.
