The WCGC Surrey Five A-Team, who won the East area final by beating the Roehampton team at Malden Golf Club on Sunday 9th September, fell to Burhill 3-2 on the 18th in the final at Clandon Regis on Saturday 20th October.
It was an extremely close match against Burhill--indeed Martin Finn and David Hatch (playing instead of regular team member John Harrington) had given the club a 2-0 lead. One more victory was all that was required for WCGC to write its name on the trophy for the first time in the long history of the event. But Liam Russell (deputising for Denis Lenihan) and Captain Chris Wilson both lost their matches, leaving Paul Clarke the last WCGC player on the course, with the destiny of the cup in his hands. He was all square with four to play, lost the fifteenth and sixteenth, had a magnificent par on the seventeenth to get one back, but couldn't quite get over the line.
No matter. Both of the WCGC teams and all who played or substituted this year did our club proud. It was the best result in the Surrey Fives the club has ever had, and it leaves Vice Captain Jez Warren with a challenge to go one better next year. All credit to Denis, who at the age of 80+, won every single match he played. Ànd well done Captain Wilson on leading the team.
