National golf Month Launches

at Wimbledon Common Golf Club

National Golf Month in May includes hundreds of free coaching sessions at golf clubs across the UK aiming to encourage more people to give golf a go.

This year there is a special focus on encouraging more women to try golf – and 2015 European Solheim Cup Captain Carin Koch joined Kate Hoey MP, the Mayor’s Commissioner for Sport in London and the former Minister for Sport, to launch National Golf Month at Wimbledon Common Golf Club on Thursday April 30.

Carin played an exhibition game with Joanna Croker, Lady Vice Captain WCGC and Lauren Horsford, 18 years old (Surrey Junior Champion in 2014 & Surrey Ladies Champion). The WAGGS acted as Course Marshalls, and a video crew followed the game as well. Syngenta, one of the sponsors, filmed video of the Ladies of WCGC with Academy members.

Market research in 2014 commissioned by Syngenta revealed that 5% of women in the UK said they would be ‘very interested’ in taking up golf. However, the research also showed that golf in the UK continues to be perceived as expensive, a sport for older men and requires club membership, potentially putting off new players.

BBC Breakfast presenter Naga Munchetty, talkSPORT presenter Georgie Bingham and 19-year-old Solheim Cup star and Ladies European Tour professional Charley Hull, are among the female personalities also lending their support to National Golf Month.

Doug Poole, a former professional golfer and the founder of National Golf Month, said: “What has happened at Wimbledon Common Golf Club is a great example of how golf is changing in the UK. The ladies academy is introducing women from different walks of life to golf and it’s great to see how, through the coaching and mentoring programme, new players are developing from starters to regular golfers."

About Wimbledon Common Golf Club

Located just 8 miles from Central London in SW19, we have a challenging woodland course with award winning greens on the historic Wimbledon Common. We welcome members as well as green fee players, with special offers including twilight golf, reduced rate for weekday players and a junior academy for 9-16 year olds.

Welcome

All standards of golfers are welcome, and a handicap is not required. The only requirement is to wear a red top for visibility to the walkers, bikers, and horse riders with whom we share the Common. We have a very welcoming membership base, with weekly matches and competitions, and a thriving ladies group.

For the protection and representation of the Club and our individual golfers, it is essential that all incidents on the course involving members of the public, other golfers, or Conservators' staff are reported to the Club. Please see more information here.

Professional Academy

Two PGA professionals, Jeff Jukes and Gary Clements, are available to provide any level of golf lessons. Individual or group lessons are available, as well as 9- or 18-hole tuition rounds. We run junior golf camps in the summer and half term for children up to 16 years old. Our ladies’ academy and men's academy are great ways to build your golf skills, with lessons and a mentoring programme with current members. Trolley hire and a golf club repair service are also available in our pro shop. Our swing studio offers practice features with instant feedback to help correct faults in your game, or you can play one of 15 international courses with friends.
